Travel Blog: Sarajevo to Split

So the 18th (July 2009) dawned right early. Well ok, 9.30 as I had to get out of my bed since I was checking out that day to lounge around the Haris Hostel for much of the day (really I was working).

After the work was done and when I realized someone had turned off the water heater and so no hot water was to be had, I decided to head out and take some final photos of Sarajevo before the sadness of leaving set in. So I headed around the corner of the hill where the hostel was and took some panoramic shots of the city. Then I met up with Rob (FollowtheHippo) and his friend Tamara and we tooled around town, drank some coffee and did some sightseeing. Well we drank some beer as well we did. I know that might be a surprise, but it’s true.

Later, I headed up the hill one more time for exercise, showered, packed up the bag and said my goodbyes (most of them via Nedzla). Then it was off to the bus station.

Now I don’t want to sound egotistical but just after I purchased my bus ticket to take me away from Sarajevo, it began to rain as if the city were weeping for my leaving…I’m just saying it was a strange coincidence is all.

Absolutely nothing exciting happened on the bus and all I really did was watch a Hornblower film, eat and sleep.

19. July 2009

Arrival time was about 4am and so I went to the train station to take a nap there until Hana arrived (an hour plus late I might add…not through any fault of Hana’s). We then went and had a coffee and some pastry on the Riva and caught up on things. A quick trek found us talking with Marijana at Three Turtles hostel who was, as always, happy to see us. We got settled as our beds were already open and took a quick shower before heading out to just do some general sightseeing and then it was off to the beach. I had mentioned BBQ to some of the others and when we returned from the beach that was indeed the plan of action.  Some quick chopping, firewood chopping and preparation found us with a fat stack of chicken shish-kebabs, Balkan salad, snacks and some drinks…and we ate, drank and played silly card games like Spoons for hours. Eventually we were a dry hostel, the card games were exhausted and so were we all…so we went to sleep.

By far Sarajevo is my favorite city on the trip. Split is a close second. If we could take the sea and beach of Split and make it part of Sarajevo it would be the ultimate location on Earth.

  1. It’s in the more commercial downtown area. There are other skyscrapers there as well if you look off in the distance of the other photos you’ll catch a glimpse of them. It’s sort of like Prague in that respect.
