Here’s a taste of what you’ll find in the WifeCycle:
The problem with hope is that you are setting yourself up for disappointment. It’s not even six months later when I find an envelope in my mailbox from her Arizona address. It’s not a letter; it’s a card of some sort. Opening it I can’t help but laugh. It’s a wedding invitation and a short letter with it. It simply says, ‘I know you won’t come, but I thought you might like to know how I’m doing.’
I laugh a mirthless, dry laugh when I crumple up the invitation, letter and envelope. If I have any heart left it’s going to hurt when I pull the knife out of it. It doesn’t. It only makes a sucking sound like a vacuum. Jacob and Lyla, the happy newlyweds, invited me over for a bonfire and beer session as I was not around for the wedding. Since I’m feeling particularly miserable, I decided it was best to not be alone. Plus, I figured I could burn this invitation and get some satisfaction.
I toss the handful of paper on the bonfire. The flames flare up in blue, green and magenta and then settle back to their regular color and size. Well that was unsatisfying.
“Ooh!” Jacob says like a child as he sits next to his new wife.
“Here’s to you having better luck with your marriage than I’ve ever had,” I say as I raise my beer in toast. He and Lyla smile awkwardly at me as I down the contents.
“I’m just on the wrong side of it all,” I say as I slowly stand and dig out the car keys.
“Someone has to be, you see, it’s all about balance in the universe. If there’s a good side there has to be a dark side. I just happen to be a big part of the dark side of romantic involvement these days. I must have taken over for someone. It’s got a shitty benefits package, I’ll say that much” As I look down at them happily cuddled together against the chill of the night, I see they are not only warmed by the fire but by their love for each other.
“Yeah, you guys are on the good side. As an agent of evil I know it when I see it. You two keep chugging along, you’re on the right track.” As I walk to my car I mumble to myself, “this train derailed years ago.”
