Travel Blog: Genocide at Srebrenica

I have neither proper nor enough words to describe Srebrenica, the genocide and what exactly happened there. As such I will simply show you the photos and videos and allow you to draw your own conclusions and do further research at your leisure. I do suggest that you do some research as something of that nature should never, ever happen again.

Over 8372 Bosnians are missing and presumed dead. Just around 4000 of them have been found in mass graves throughout the countryside. The rest remain hidden wherever the Serbian army lead by Ratko Madic hid them. I am deeply saddened by it all. Not only because of the genocide but the decided lack of support and intervention on the part of the international community including the UN. The area had been declared the world’s first UN ‘Safe Area’ and yet, thousands were killed while UN forces stood idly by. No shot was ever fired by the UN troops though they were certainly outgunned. I don’t understand why the UN would even create a ‘safe area’ if they were not going to support the site with ample troops and back up.
