How I Write – Part 2

Welcome to the second chronicle following the creation of Myranda’s Story – The Journey of Why. A few things have come to light today. I’ve realized that essentially the chronicling I’m doing here parallels what I’m asking developers to do at Gamers Daily News with the developer diaries. This is essentially a developer diary of the creation of a book or series of books much like they keep diaries about how the game development progresses.

The other thing I’ve come to realize is that the writing of this book has taken the place of my normal reading. Generally I read in two places on a daily basis – the toilet and bed. The toilet is ideal as you’ve minutes to yourself in a room where no one would think to bother you. Not that there’s anyone here most of the time to bother me anyway. Perhaps it’s just the thought of the isolation that makes it easy to write there or perhaps it’s the whirr of the fan…who knows. Either way it’s become a daily writing session of a page or two. The other place I’m writing is in bed. Generally around 3.30 or 4.00 I’m ready for bed and so I go brush my teeth and stuff and then hop into bed. Normally I would read for 15 or 20 minutes until I was too tired to continue.

Now that’s also a place of writing and I can generally get up to three pages done there. So that’s about 5 handwritten pocket notebook pages a day right now.

This morning round 4.15 another character revealed their name to me. This time it’s Sam. So now we’ve got four characters in the book with names and around two dozen people who are more like props still. I think it’s time to start tracking the characters in another area of the site. I’ll do that later today.

I wanted to tell you about the story’s progress today. Like I said nothing comes into true focus until I get to it. Right now I’ve developing a very small part of the world but it will lay the foundation for the rest of it. Plus I’m introducing major characters who will be with Myranda in one form or another throughout much of the story. I think this is partly what I didn’t do properly in the first book (Wicked Luck – Book I of the Demon-God Trilogy with Funesto Semidio Devington, the Bard – Still in perhaps an unpublishable state). The stage wasn’t properly set and so the characters sort of stumbled about not knowing where the props were and where they should be for each scene. I think I’ve gotten better at this now and it will show in this, the third book (the second being The WifeCycle which I’m shopping around to agents at present).

So this minor area of the entire world where the story takes place is very important as it sets the tone and scope of Myranda’s view of the world around her and perhaps pushes her to move forward. I don’t want to give too many details but it is the place where she’ll find her first friend and a few enemies. It’s an oppressive sort of place and it’s meant to be for various reasons. I imagine she’ll be there for another ten or fifteen written pages as I don’t want to rush this part even though I’m eager for her to get moving…
