In Foundations, I introduced the Trainway which has two spirals, one is the Upward, and the other, obviously, the Downward. But the Downward Spiral also has other meanings and certain events lead the world onto what can be perceived as a Downward Spiral. (There are other hidden meanings in the Trainway and its spirals but I will save those for another day.)
This is one of the themes of the Journey of Why. When people stop asking certain questions of their leaders, things are spiraling downward, out of their control. That’s sort of what happened in their universe, the people gave up, or were fooled into giving up control to the wrong people and now their world is dark, small, and oppressive while their government is large, mysterious, and in total control of every aspect of their lives.
A scary parallel to some things happening in the real world right now. Which is the whole point of the retro sci-fi, paralleling and discussing real world issues.
